On Thursday, 13 November, The StandardX, Melbourne will open On Top, its design-forward rooftop bar and lounge that captures the creative energy of Fitzroy from above. Previously exclusive to hotel guests, the venue has now been reimagined, opening its doors to the local neighbourhood, in-the-know out-of-towners and anyone looking for a genuinely good time.
Accommodating up to 60 guests, On Top is an intimate rooftop escape that feels inviting and social – the warm colour palette and arid planting juxtaposed against Fitzroy’s industrial grit. With architecture by Woods Bagot and design by Hecker Guthrie, the space offers a mix of soft lounge seating and bistro tables, with a Corten fireplace that nods to the neighbourhood’s historic factories. Bar ledges with stools hug the edges, offering sweeping views across to the city skyline. Designed with the unpredictable Melbourne weather in mind, the fully weatherproof space is complete with a retractable roof and heating system, ensuring comfort all year-round.

The wine list – curated collaboratively between The StandardX, Melbourne and Australian-based wine importer and distributor Lo-Fi – showcases local Victorian suppliers and producers that focus on low intervention and sustainable wines. Meanwhile, a Japanese-style vending machine stocked with pre-batched cocktails, wines and non-alc options brings the fun factor.
A rotation of local DJs will soundtrack Friday and Saturday evenings as well as Sunday afternoons with curated sets that transport patrons to Brooklyn in the ’90s, Lagos beaches and the bars of downtown LA during golden hour.
